Tenerife

The island of Tenerife is the largest of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands. It has a surface of 2,034 km2, a triangular shape and at its center stands the highest mountain in the Spanish territory, Teide, with 3,718 metres. The island is about 300 km. from the African continent and about 1300 km. from the Iberian peninsula.

It´s an island of volcanic origin, has a mild and subtropical climate all year round caused by the ocean currents of the Canary Islands and the trade winds, with temperatures ranging between 18º in winter and 25º in the summer.

The island´s rough orography and its variety of climates create a territory of many landscapes and forms, from Teide National Park up to Los Gigantes cliffs with their vertical walls, going through semi-desertic areas in the south, valleys with tropical and subtropical farming and laurisilva forests. The great climatic diversity and the landscape value of Tenerife correspond to a wealth of ecosystems, each one with its characteristical flora and fauna.

Within this space is the Teide National Park. Since 1954, shares with Caldera de Taburiente, in La Palma, the honor of being the first acknowledged protected space in the Canaries. Teide, declared Historical Heritage of Humanity and symbol of identity of the archipelago, is the best framework in order to study, observe and recreate the manifestations that characterize the volcanic islands. Tenerife´s relief enhances its dorsal axis, the Teno and Anaga massifs; the one of Adeje, smaller; the large building of the volcanic Mount Teide; Güímar and La Orotava valleys, as well as the low islands of Teno and Daute.

Of irregular rainfall -the average does not exceed 550 cubic millimetres-, water, however, is trapped in the porous soil, which, combined with the developed infrastructure in order to capture and drive it, makes it possible to cover almost the entire demand of the Island, as well as to sustain a rich and diverse agriculture.
